Going on Vacation Without Any Plans - An Adventure!
Summer vacation was finally here! No more waking up early, no more homework, no more sitting in class all day. Just endless hours of fun and freedom. My parents surprised me and my little brother Tommy by announcing we were going on a big trip. But this wasn't going to be just any
"We're not making any plans at all," my dad said with a huge grin. "We're just going to get in the car and drive, stopping wherever looks fun along the way!"
Tommy and I looked at each other with our mouths wide open. No plans? No schedules? No itinerary? This was unheard of in our family. My dad is usually super organized and has every minute of our trips mapped out. But he said this time, we were just going to go with the flow and have an adventure!
I wasn't sure if I should be really excited or a little nervous. Part of me thought it was going
to be the best thing ever to not have a rigid schedule. We could do whatever we wanted, whenever we wanted! But the other part of me felt a little anxious about not having any idea what we'd be doing or where we'd be staying. What if we got lost or ended up somewhere lame with nothing to do?
Well, there was only one way to find out. The next morning, we all piled into our car and started driving. At first it felt really weird not having any direction or destination planned out. We just headed eastward since my dad thought it would be fun to drive along the coast. An hour later, we stopped at a little beach town that had the most gorgeous sandy shores. We spent the whole day there building sandcastles, swimming, and having a picnic lunch. As the sun started to set, we looked for a hotel right there in that cute seaside village.
That night at dinner, my dad asked us, "So where should we go tomorrow?"
"The biggest waterpark in the state is just two hours away!" Tommy exclaimed. Since we were just winging it, we decided that sounded like a fun idea for the next day.
The waterpark was amazing! Tons of huge waterslides, a wave pool, lazy river, and more. We didn't leave until they closed at 8pm. By then we were exhausted, but still hadn't picked where to go next.
Over the next week, we just kept driving all around with no set plans. One day we went hiking in the mountains. Another day we visited a famous museum in a big city. Then we spent two nights camping in the forest before ending up at a theme park. We saw so many funny roadside attractions like the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball and Bug Village. We discovered awesome diners and restaurants we never would have found if we didn't just stumble upon them.
Without any plans tying us down, we had total freedom to do whatever looked interesting in that moment. If we felt like spending an extra day somewhere fun, we could. If a certain town seemed boring, we just hopped back in the car and drove on. Sure, there were a couple times we struggled to find decent places to stay for the night. And yes, we took a few wrong turns and got a little lost once or twice. But that was all just part of the adventure!
My favorite part was stopping at all the little quirky shops, festivals, and events you normally zoom right past with your nose stuck to a schedule. We went to a Belgian waffle tasting event, the World's Largest Bake Sale, and Watermelon Seed Spitting Championship just because we randomly came across them. Those are the kinds of unique experiences you'll never get with your days planned out down to the minute.
Don't get me wrong, mapped out vacations with strict itineraries can be awesome too. My parents always make those kinds of trips really fun and we get to see all the biggest attractions wherever we go. But there was just something special and exciting about this trip with no plans at all. It forced us to live in the moment, go with the flow, and stumble upon hidden gems. We had to talk to locals, ask for advice, and come up with new ideas for fun things to do every single day. It was a little taste of what real exploration must have felt like hundreds of years ago for pioneers and adventure seekers.
As fun as our no-plans vacation was, I don't think I'd want to do it all the time. Having zero idea what you'll be doing or where you'll be staying each night is undeniably a little str
essful. My parents like having a general framework and we definitely rely on the internet and apps more than we could on this trip. But every once in a while, ditching the schedules and just winging it makes for an incredibly memorable and exciting experience.
