Personal Statement
Since I was a child, I was taught by my father----a senior prosecutor with years of experience in fighting against corruption, that if one aspires for 100 percent return, one must make 200 percent efforts. Since then, no matter what I do, I will spare no efforts to achieve it.
Before entering into senior school, I was an art specialized student, having spent 12 years in learning opera. During this period, it comes clear to me that success comes from one percent gift and ninety-nine percent efforts. I took arts as my career path and set being a talented musician as my career goal. It was not until I saw my father’s closing address of a court session that I developed my interest in law. After the discussion with my father, I decided to attach more importance to basic courses, such as Mathematics, English, Physics, etc, thus to make full preparation for my future study in law. My efforts in learning all the courses well finally paid off. After the college entrance examination, I was enrolled by Nankai University’s Law School out of my excellent performance----ranking 1st in my school.

Naikai University, the alma mater of our beloved late Premier Zhou Enlai and Premier Wen Jiabao, is a key multidisciplinary and research-oriented university. During my four years’ undergraduate study in Nankai, I completed all the courses with high grades. Through the study of Civil Law, Criminal Law, Intellectual-property WordSunny
Law and other laws, I have formed a basic understanding of different laws. My exchange experience in XXX University took me to the fascinating world of law. There I completed several law-related courses, such as Legal Discovery, Basics of US Legal System, Legal Practice, etc. At the end of my exchange study, I participated in the Moot Court in Oklahoma State court, during which I was fully exposed to the charm of US legal system. This experience brought me to a new horizon of law. Thus, back from XXX University, I set my goal, that is to pursue my master in US after my graduation from Nankai.
In addition to my excellent performance in my major, I also took an active part in extra-curriculum activities. During my term as the president of Law School’s students union, I organized a variety of activities and made Law School well-known in my university. When I was a junior, I successfully joined in Nankai University’s Jessup Legal Debate Team after a fierce competition with 330 applicants. As a member of debate team, I used to participate in China’s legal debating competition with other team members on behalf of my university. During the competition, my proficiency and logical thinking ability were highly appreciated by the judges, which enhanced my confidence in furthering my study in law.
Upon graduation, I passed China National Judicial Examination (Chinese lawyer qualification examination) and became a lawyer. With my solid knowledge of law and brilliant records for four years of legal training, I was recruited as an assistant lawyer in XXX Law Firm. And there, I finally got a chan
ce to see closely at the real work for
lawyers and legal practitioners. Meanwhile, I made rapid progress as I was participating in many tough, challenging and time sensitive trials, such as 12 companies’ asset acquisition and clear capital accounting. I also provided legal consultancy to two private companies in Tianjin XX economic development zone. One-year work as a legal practitioner seriously challenged my own knowledge and capacity in terms of delivering true legal counseling and advisory opinions. Excited and obligated at the same time, I found all the complex market changes, various securities regulations and corporate laws, China and foreign came down on me like a rapid waterfall that almost snatched my breath. It was at that moment that I realized that I need to think serious of my own progress again. My knowledge can not keep up with the need in legal profession. Naturally, the idea of going to a common law country, preferably the United States, for an advanced degree in law came into my mind. I believe studying in an international school will help me to better understand different laws and societies, and to meet many people from different parts of the world that imparts in me refined senses of cultures of law, habits of law and ethics and practices of law.
The past several years have witnessed my industriousness and commitment as a legal counsel, and the next several years, I believe, will behold me embarking on a brand-new journey of learning and pra

practicing experiences have laid down a good foundation for me. My acute interest to try on my newly learned legal knowledge will support me to further my study in law. For me, law has become something not as simple as a guide book regulating behaviors, but the blood and bones for a decent, orderly and just society. This belief in the vitality of law enkindled my passion for law and the career from early time in my life. This path is my path, for school, career and for a lifetime. Cornell’s acclaimed LLM program with focus on US and Common Law System, Corporate practices and Unified Commercial Code practices, is perfect for me. I intend to focus on commercial law, litigation procedures, US and Common law courts when I enroll in Cornell’s law school LLM program. To be a professional lawyer is my goal. I will always stick to it and never give up in this career path. And I am confident that Cornell’s LLM program will give me training, opportunities and prospect for the future.
