China is fast rocking
It has been 20 years since the birth of Chinese rock ‘n’ roll. In 1986, during a TV talent show, Cui Jian jumped on stage and sang“Nothing to My Name”(“一无所有”). Almost overnight, he became a household name (家喻户晓的名字) in China. Rock ‘n’ roll had finally arrived.
Wherever Cui Jian and his band performed, they were greeted by large audiences shouting crazily and rocking out. At the time, media reports said, “Rock rightly satisfies the demand of a generation to speak out and say what they feel.”
Following Cui Jian, there came rock bands like Tang Dynasty (唐朝), Panther (黑豹), and Cobra (眼镜蛇). Rock reached a peak of creativity and popular-ity between 1990 and 1993. Rock subculture (亚文化), such as men with long hair, jeans, black leather coats, and a carefree lifestyle also became popular.
Now a younger generation is approaching rock music in its own way. Over the last 20 years, with Chinese art and culture diversifying (多样化), the country’s rock scene has greatly changed.

consists of five boys from Beijing who love rock music.

When they decided to start a band, they didn’t have a
name in mind. There was a convenience store near where they practised. They went there a lot and de-cided to name the band Convenience Store.In the same year, the band took part in a national new rock band competition. They won five awards.That’s how they became famous.In 2004 they released (发行) their first album,“Five Star”. The public liked it a lot.
The Convenience Store’s music is influenced by European rock bands. They use a lot of guitars, base (贝斯) and drums. Their songs express what young people are thinking now.
Hopscotch  （跳房子乐队）：
Guitarist Li Tao founded the group in Wuhan in June 2000. The band was nameless until a talented young girl called Tian Y uan joined in 2001 as singer and lyricist (作词者). She was then only 16 years old and fast became the band’s front girl.
In 2002 the band released their first album, “A Wishful Way”. Their music is influenced by trip-hop (一种英伦街舞音乐) and independent rock. The al-bum was well received by critics and the public alike.
Unlike other young bands on the Chinese music scene, Hopscotch’s lyrics are in English.“W estern rock music really influenced our song writing,” says Tian Y
