Oil-rich Qatar is the world’s top-saving country, leading a list dominated by petroleum powers in the Middle East and emerging nations in the Far East, according to the latest data released by the International Monetary Fund.
根据国际货币基金组织(IMF)发布的最新数据,石油资源丰富的卡塔尔是全球储蓄率最高的国家,在今年这份由中东石油大国和远东新兴国家主宰的榜单上拔得头筹。
Qatar’s gross national savings, a measure that accounts for both private and public savings, is 59% of its GDP. Two other countries, Kuwait and China, also save over half of their GDPs.

Most of the Middle Eastern countries on the list began saving huge amounts of their money around 2000, at a time when oil prices were spiking.

“There is a very strong correlation with oil prices, with a lag of a year, and national savings, ” Iqbal said.

The large majority of Kuwait and Qatar’s savings are publicly held, he said. Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, the fourth and 10th-ranked countries, have more private savings because their governments have made the choice to reinvest oil money back into the private sector.

China expert Orville Schell said the country’s savings may come as a surprise to outsiders. “They see this exuberant consumer culture and this explosion of shopping malls and this expression of consumerism that even puts the western countries to shame, ” he said.

狮子座男生But as China pulled away from its massive social programs in the 1980s, the Chinese started saving to pay out of their own pocket for retirement, education and healthcare, Schell added. Even though consumerism is booming on the surface today in China, conservative spending habits are deeply ingrained in the culture.

Other big savers in the East include Singapore, Nepal, South Korea, India, Malaysia and Thailand.

The United States, whose economy is nearly double the size of China’s, saves an estimated $2.8 trillion, 17% of GDP.

As China moves from being an export-focused country to a nation more focused on its own massive domestic market, Schell said it will be critical that the Chinese eventually unlock their pent-up savings and start spending more.
