You go out for a meal. You scan a QR code to order the food, but it asks for your phone number. You ride in a taxi, and your addresses are leaked. You go back home and are asked to look into a facial recognition camera.Data collection is everywhere.
However, the personal information collected by companies can be leaked for marketing or used for communications fraud(电信).According to a2018survey of5,458people by the China Consumers Association, 85.2percent of people said they had experienced personal information leaks from applications on their smart phones. Most said they got unwanted calls or text messages afterward.
On Nov1,the personal information protection law came into effect in China. The law defines personal information as any kind of information about people who are or can be identified,in electronic or other forms. So a person’s name, date of birth,ID number, address and phone number are all personal information.
According to the law, activities such as collecting, using, processing and trading of personal information will be strictly regulated. One key rule is that those handling personal information should inform users and get permission. For sensitive information, such as fingerprints, faces, religious beliefs, medical health, financial accounts and all data relating to minors under14,there are stricter rules on related activities.
Protection of personal information of online platform users is especially stressed.According to a report released in June on Internet development in China, the country has more than one billion Internet users and60percent of surveyed applications had collected users’information illegally.
Many apps would collect users’information even when the app was not in use. They could access the phone-book,photos,turn on the microphone and get the users’location. That’s why protection of personal information is needed, according to Zhou Hanhua,a researcher with the Institute of Law of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

Every year, workers put up a big, freshly cut evergreen tree in a historic building in Asbury Park,New Jersey to celebrate Christmas. But recently workers put up a very different kind of Christmas Tree instead.
Unlike an evergreen,it requires little care and can never die. That is because the2021Christmas Tree is
made wholly of a thick and strong paper material called cardboard. When the winter holidays end, the“tree”is to be recycled. The piece uses natural and artificial lighting to darken parts of the tree while shining light on others. In this way,the piece’s appearance changes throughout the day.The tree’s creators sought to honor elements of Asbury Park’s natural environment, cityscape and rich musical history.
Opinions on the tree are mixed.“I like that it’s different…It’s pretty interesting,”said local man Chris Trifari. Local Elizabeth Khimitch offered similar praise.“I think it’s very creative.”She had come to the Grand Arcade to take pictures of her dogs in front of the tree.Others on the boardwalk were not as pleased by the tree.Antony Solimando said it looked like“an Amazon package.”“Can’t we just have our traditional tree?”added Amy Mackey.
Michael Lavallee,a local artist who goes by the name Porkchop, created the piece with Brad Hoffer. They call it The Giving Tree.He said the company told him there would not be a natural Christmas tree at Convention Hall this year.“I was asked to come in and do something festive-ish,”said Porkchop.Festive means celebratory, especially in connection with a holiday.

Scientists say baby sharks are at risk of being born smaller and without the energy they need to survive because of warning oceans from climate change.
Scientists studied epaulette sharks, which live off Australia and New Guinea. They found that warmer conditions sped up the sharks’growing process. That meant the sharks were born earlier and very tired. The findings could be used in the study of other sharks, including those that give birth to living young.
The scientists studied27sharks.Some were raised in average summer water temperatures,about27degrees Celsius.Others were raised in higher temperatures around29degrees Celsius and31degrees Celsius. They found that the sharks raised in the warmest temperatures weighed much less than those raised in average temperatures. They also showed reduced energy levels.
Epaulette Sharks can grow to a length of about one meter.Their name comes from large spots on their bodies that look like decorations on some military clothing.
One study this year found that worldwide numbers of oceanic sharks and rays dropped more than70percent between1970and2018.Overfishing is a main concern, while climate change and pollution also threaten sharks.
Carolyn Wheeler is a doctoral student at the University of Massachusetts Boston and with the ARC Ce
ntre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies at James Cook University in Australia. She was the lead author of the epaulette shark study. She said that while all the sharks survived, those raised in warmer temperatures were not strong enough to survive for long in the wild.
She added,“If the sharks are born smaller than usual, they are probably going to have to start looking for food sooner—and they’re going to have less time to adjust to their surroundings.”The study should serve as a warning to ocean governing agencies that careful management is needed to prevent the loss of more sharks.
32.According to the text, how does the warmer conditions affect the baby sharks?
A.They affect their body weight.
B.They destroy their food.
C.They reschedule their moving route.
D.They affect their body temperature.
