It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route (B) through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself offto the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked overand asked him why he wasn't with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school's coach and asked him what had happened. “Iwas afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,"he explained uncomfortably.“Igave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide."
I bit back my frustration (懊 恼).I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find hin coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that's all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school,Iwas familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud ofhis strong determination.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. Seeing his face filled with anxiety, I felt sad, deciding to talk something with him. Turning to David, I smiled,“David,Loowhat a wonderful event!"“Yeah!"David smiled weakly, bowing his head.
Patting on his should I said in a soft voice,"I heard you had worked so hard for this event. How I admire your stron determination. Why not give it a try?"“Teacher, I am afraid kids from other schools will lau me. I think what the coach said is right." murmured David, with glum looks on his face.“ButDavid, what counts most is to participate to the best of your ability in whatever we're doing. L you agree?"After a temporary hesitation,David nodded in agreement, finally deciding to join in the cross-country team.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. With a blast of the gun, David tried his best to shoot from the start line, but he failed. Painful and a bit embarrassed as he was, he still dragged his feet to keep moving forward. The sun was beating down, the hot weather suffocating. After what seemed years, David, rocking his small body like a cat on a hot brick, eventually finished his run as the last one. When approaching the finish line, he burst into a big toothy smile and waved to me with excitement, crying"I made it!I made it!"All the kids including those from other schools erupted into a big applause, cheering from his determination and persistence. At the moment,a flush of admiration and joy swept over me.

We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. Silently, he just stared at the other participants who were warming up without saying anything. So,I decided to infuse some courage into this tough boy, but I couldn't find a way out. Seeing a cocoon on the tree beside us,a brilliant idea occurred to me. I pointed the cocoon to him and asked him softly,"do you know what it would be like in the future?""No." he answered casually."I guess nobody would know if the caterpillar is not willing to give a shot on itself." Finally, he turned his head to me with determination in his eyes.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. I was so delighted that my words worked and I prayed for this boy from the bottom of my heart. With the starting gun sounding, the runners were off. Following his team members, David finished the whole run and got a good ranking, which surprised all of us,including his coach and the runners from the other schools. Everyone was so moved by David's spirit that they gathered around David and throw him in the air. At that moment, I saw a brave butterfly flying in the sky.

你有多久没有看过那片海什么歌We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn't look at me. Worried about him, I could not restrain myself from thinking,'why did he not choose to run? What if others look down upon him because he is an exception?" At that time, I knew I had better cheer him up. I put his hand in mine, saying in an encouraging voice, 'David, you can run as fast as others, why not give it your best shot?" 'Hearing my words, David raised his head in disbelief and held my hands tightly. With his usual big toothy smile coming back, he nodded in determination, 'Thank you, Madam,I will not give up.'
