The Things Chinese Parents Worry About Most
My name is Xiaoming and I am 10 years old. I study really hard in school because my parents always tell me education is super important. In China, parents put a lot of pressure on kids to do well academically. Let me tell you about some of the biggest things Chinese parents seem to care about the most.
    Grades, Grades, Grades
If you ask any Chinese parent what they want most for their child, I bet they will say "good grades." From a very young age, Chinese kids are expected to get perfect scores on tests and rank at the very top of the class. My parents are always nagging me about my grades an
d wanting to see my test papers. If I get anything less than 90%, they start freaking out and lecturing me about not working hard enough. They believe good grades are the key to getting into a great university and having a successful career later on.
    Extracurricular Activities
关心人的话    It's not just about bookwork though. Chinese parents also put a huge emphasis on extracurriculars like music, art, sports, etc. The thinking is that kids need to be "well-rounded" with lots of talents and skills. My parents signed me up for piano lessons when I was 5 years old. I also take Chinese calligraphy classes, tennis lessons, and am part of the school math club and English drama club. I'm super busy after school with all these activities! My parents want me to have amazing skills and accomplishments to get into the best universities.
    Academic Competitions
Another thing Chinese parents go crazy over are academic competitions and contests. E
very year, there are big competitions in subjects like math, science, English, etc. The winners get awards and it looks great on your record. My parents are always bugging me to participate and pushing me to study super hard to try to win these contests. Last year, I came in second place in the provincial English competition and my parents were pretty disappointed that I didn't get first place!
    Preparing for Tests
Speaking of tests, Chinese parents will go to crazy extremes when it comes to helping kids prepare for important exams. Many parents will hire expensive private tutors to work with their kids. They will also buy lots of practice test books and make their kids work through them over and over. In the months leading up to a major test, parents will take their kids out of extracurricular activities so they can focus 100% just on studying. Some parents will even take their kids on vacation to avoid distractions during peak study periods! For big exams like the university entrance test, preparation is intense for years in advance.
    Showing Off Achievements
Chinese parents also love showing off and bragging about their kids' accomplishments and achievements. It's like a status thing to try to prove they are superior parents by having smarter and more talented kids. My mom is always chatting with the other moms about what schools, classes, and activities their kids are in. She loves whipping out my awards, certificates and report cards to demonstrate what an amazing child I am. If one of their friends' kids does better than me at something, I can sense the jealousy! There is a lot of competition between parents about whose kid is the best student.
As you can see, Chinese parents put tremendous pressure on their children to succeed academically from a very young age. Getting good grades, racking up accomplishments, winning awards, acing tests - these are pretty much all Chinese parents care about and obsess over. It can be pretty stressful and overwhelming for us kids at times. But our parents deeply believe that pushing us hard is the key to helping us have bright futures and the best opportunities in life. I just try my best to live up to their high expectations!

The Topics Chinese Parents Care Most About
My mom and dad are always talking about stuff and I'm supposed to listen carefully because it's important. They worry a lot about things and want me to do well. Here are the main things they care about:
    School Grades
This is number one for sure! My parents are always asking about my grades and test scores. They want me to get the highest marks possible in every subject. Math, Chinese, English, science - it doesn't matter, they expect straight A's. If I bring home a B, they ask what went wrong and make me promise to do better next time. Sometimes they even ground me if my grades slip! It's because they think good grades will help me get into a great university later.
    Study Habits
Besides just caring about my final grades, my parents are very focused on how hard I'm
working and studying. They expect me to spend hours every night doing homework after school. If I try to go play before finishing all my assignments, they'll scold me. My mom has setup a rigid daily schedule that maps out my entire day - when to wake up, eat, study, exercise, sleep, etc. She checks up frequently to make sure I'm following it too. There's no pool or video game time unless I've completed that day's work. It's intense!
