Are you now using an email account that will not be available after you switch to Carol Woods campus wireless internet (e.g., RoadRunner, Earthlink, Mindspring)? If so, you will need to set up a new account and notify your correspondents of your change of address.
If you are looking for a different email system, Gmail is a widely-used option. It is free, offers a lot of mail storage (10 GB) and can be used with mobile devices (e.g., iPad, smartphones) as well as with your web browser, with Outlook and other mail programs. Because Gmail is popular, you may have friends who can help you if you have questions. One caution: some Gmail users have reported that Gmail frequently makes changes and “improvements” th at they don’t always announce in advance.
Here’s how to create a new account:
1.Go to gmail
2.Click on Create an Account
3.Fill out the information in the boxes on the right hand side of the page
4.When you fill in the Choose your username box and hit Enter, Gmail checks to see if your
preferred name is already in use by someone else. If it is, you can either accept one of the suggested alternatives or keep trying other options until you find one you like that is
available. Usernames are not case sensitive.
5.As you start to fill in the Password box, Gmail gives you feedback about whether it is a
weak, or strong password. We strongly agree with their recommendation that you use a password that you do not use for other websites, etc.
6.If you have a mobile phone that can receive text messages, put this number in the Mobile
Phone box. This will be used to send you information about resetting your password, etc. If don’t want to provide the number or you don’t have a mobile phone, you can leave it blank.
7.The Your current email address box lets you fill in another (non-Gmail) email address that
can be used if Gmail needs to send you info about unusual account activity or other
problems. If you do not have another email address, you can leave this blank. Do not use your current RoadRunner, etc., email if you are going to cancel that service.
8.If you want to keep your current home page in your web browser, uncheck the Default
homepage box. If it is checked, your web browser will go directly to the Gmail login page when you open it.
9.In the Prove you’re not a robot box, type in the letters/numbers you see and hit enter. If
you can’t read some of them, click on the circle-with-an-arrow character to the right of the box to get a new set of letters/numbers. You can keep trying several times if necessary. 10.Click on “I agree to Google Terms of Service and Privacy Policy”(you can’t proceed unless
you do). If you want to read these first, click on the links.
11.Uncheck the box for Google may use my account information to personalize +1's on

content and ads on non-Google websites– this is one of Google’s social media features that can tell everyone what other websites you are viewing and what sites you like. Some CW residents who checked this have received a lot of spam email (which stopped when they unchecked the box).
12.After you fill out all these boxes and hit enter, you will see a Create Your Profile page. If you
add a photo or other information here, it will be publicly viewable by anyone. You can leave this blank.
13.The next page will take you to your new Gmail account, where you will see a few ‘Welcome’
messages with information about customizing Gmail, etc.
Now that you have created your new Gmail account, you can start using it right away, or you can adjust some of the settings so it is more useful for the way you use email. To find these options, click on the gear-like symbol in the upper right corner, then on Settings. There is a rather overwhelming number of choices, but consider looking at these two:
a)Select IMAP access: you will need to do a one-time setup so you can use Gmail from
either the web or in Outlook, or on more than one device (e.g., your home computer
and in the Computer Room or on your laptop and your iPad, etc). To do this: under
Settings, click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP, then click on Enable IMAP, then Save
changes. You can select other options on that page, too, but you don’t have to.
b)Import Mail and Contacts: Gmail will import your address book/contact list from
certain other email services, including the webmail version of RoadRunner. To do
this: under Settings, click on Accounts and Import, Import Mail and Contacts, then
fill in the email address and password for your other account. If Gmail can import
from this type of account, it will give you the option to select whether to import the
contact list only or both contact list and email. (This import process takes a while but
you can continue to use Gmail while it’s importing.)  Warning: if you have a lot of
messages in your RoadRunner account, just ‘Import contacts,’ not mail. This will give
you an opportunity to clean out your old mail, and you can forward any messages
you want to keep to your new Gmail account.
When you are finished using Gmail, click on the picture icon above the settings icon, then click on Sign
out. You can connect to your email in the future by going to gmail and logging in. If you prefer to use Outlook instead of a web browser, look for our handout, Using Gmail with Outlook (coming soon).
