前情概要：奴⾪卡西（Cassy）逃⾛，奴⾪主勒格雷（Legree）追捕不成，严刑拷问汤姆叔叔（Uncle Tom）卡西的下落，但汤姆叔叔坚决不开⼝，最后昏死在勒格雷的拳脚之下……
第⼀幕Scene I
有故⼈⾃远⽅来
约翰尼·谢尔⽐（Johnny Shelby）（汤姆叔叔前主⼈的⼉⼦）来种植园寻汤姆。
旁⽩：Tom lay in the shed for three days. A stranger came to the Legree ’ s farm. The stranger was a young white man. He was Johnny Shelby. He resolved to find out and re-purchase his old friend.
汤姆在⼯棚⾥躺了三天，⼀个陌⽣⼈来到了勒格雷的种植园，他是个年轻的⽩⼈。他就是约翰尼·谢尔⽐。他决⼼到并赎回他的⽼朋友。
(约翰尼·谢尔⽐在客厅⾥与勒格雷会⾯，勒格雷态度⼗分傲慢⽆礼)
Johnny Shelby: I understand, that you bought, in New Orleans, a boy, named Tom. He used to be on my father’s place, and I came to see if I couldn’t buy him back.”
“据我了解，你在新奥尔良买了⼀个名叫汤姆的⿊奴，他从前是我⽗亲家的奴⾪，我来看看是不是能把他买回去。”
Legree（very angry）: Yes, I did buy such a fellow,The most rebellious, saucy, impudent dog!Set up my niggers to run away!when I bid him tell me where they was, he up and said he knew, but he wouldn’t tell; I gave him the cussedest flogg ing I ever gave nigger yet. I be lieve he’s trying to die; but I don’t know as he’l l make it out.
不错，我是买了这么个家伙，谁也没有这狗东西难对付、放肆和⽆礼。居然挑唆我的⿊⿁逃跑。我要他说出她们的下落时，他站起来说他知道，可是不会告诉我的；我给了他⼀顿好打，这是我打⿊⿁打得最狠的⼀次，可他就是不说。我想他快死了，不过也许他能挺过来。
Johnny Shelby(impetuously):Where is he?Let me see him.
“他在哪⼉？”约翰尼焦急地问道，“让我去看看他。”
little fellow : He’s in the shed
“在那边棚⼦⾥。”⼀个给约翰尼牵马的⼩⿊奴说。.
Legree : Out ! Shit!(kicked the boy, and swore at him)
勒格雷踢了孩⼦⼀脚，咒骂着他。
老师体罚学生约翰尼起⾝向棚⼦⾛去
第⼆幕Scene II
⼩棚中的永别
旁⽩：Tom had been lying two days since the fatal night, not suffering, for every nerve of suffering was blunted and destroyed. He lay, for the most part, in a quiet stupor; for the laws of a powerful and well-knit frame would not at once release the imprisoned spirit.
⾃从那不幸的⼀夜后，汤姆已经躺了两天。他不觉得痛，因为他⾝上所有的感觉神经，都已遭到破坏，⿇⽊了。⼤部分时间他都是不省⼈事、⼀动不动地躺着，因为⼀个强健结实的躯体有⾃⼰的，不会⽴刻释放禁锢其中的灵魂。
约翰尼⾛进那棚⼦
Johnny Shelby(painfully):Is it possible, is it possible?Uncle Tom, my poor, poor old friend!
当约翰尼⾛进那棚⼦时，顿觉天旋地转，极其痛苦.“这可能吗？这可能吗？汤姆叔叔，我那可怜的、苦命的⽼朋友！”
Johnny Shelby(painfully): O, dear Uncle Tom! do wake,—do speak once more! Look up! Here’s Johnny,—your own little Johnny. Don’t you know me?
“啊，亲爱的汤姆叔叔，请你醒醒吧！再说⼀句话吧！看呀，约翰尼少爷来了，你⼼爱的⼩约翰尼少爷呀！你认不出我了吗？”Uncle Tom (speaking in a feeble voice): Master Johnny , what a fine young man y ou’ve grown to be! Praise the Lor d. now I can die happy.
声⾳⼗分微弱地说道，“约翰尼少爷，你已经长成了⼀个多么好的⼩伙⼦呀！感谢上帝，现在我能快乐地死去了……“
Johnny Shelby :You shan’t die! you mustn’t die, nor think of it! I’ve come to buy you, and take you home.
你不会死！你不能死！别想到死！我是来赎你，带你回家的。
Uncle Tom(weakly):Master ,You are too late. The Lord is taking me home with him . Please tell Chloe I am sorry I could not see her .Tell her and my children to follow me to Heaven……
少爷，你来得太晚了。上帝就要带我回家了，请告诉克鲁伊，很抱歉我见不到她了，告诉她和孩⼦们到天堂我……
勒格雷漫步来到了棚房门⼝，故作满不在乎的⼀副顽固神情往⾥⾯看了⼀眼，转⾝⾛开了。
Johnny Shelby ：The old Satan! It’s a comfort to think the devil will pay hi m for this, some of these days!
“⽼魔王！”约翰尼⽓愤地说，“想到有⼀天魔⿁会和他算账，⼼⾥还痛快点。”

啊，别这么说，啊，你千万别这么说！

旁⽩：Johnny sat there for a moment, holding tom .Then, with a smile, he fell asleep. This place seemed special. Johnny felt like God was in the room with him.
5寸照片多大约翰尼抱着汤姆坐了⼀会。然后，他就含笑长逝了。这个地⽅似乎有些奇异，约翰尼感觉到上帝在这个房间⾥，和他在⼀起……
第三幕Scene III
评价一个人的词语悲痛的消息
约翰尼在纸上写字，擦了擦眼睛，撕碎信纸，⾛出去
旁⽩：Johnny Shelby had written to his mother merely a line, stating the day that she might expect h
im home. Of the death scene of his old friend he had not the heart to write. He had tried several times, and only succeeded in half choking himself; and invariably finished by tearing up the paper, wiping his eyes, and rushing somewhere to get quiet.
There was a pleased bustle all though the Shelby mansion, that day, in expectation of the arrival of young Master Johnny.
约翰尼·谢尔⽐给母亲写了⼀封短信报告⾃⼰的归期，纸上只有寥寥数⾏字。他
⼏次想写出⽼朋友逝世的情景，却总是忍不住泪⽔盈框，哽咽难书，最终只好撕碎信纸，擦⼲泪⽔，寻⼀个去处使⾃⼰镇定⼼神。
这⼀天希尔⽐宅院⾥上下欢腾，热闹异常，等待着为少爷约翰尼接风洗尘。
母亲谢尔⽐太太坐在客厅⾥，克鲁伊⼤婶在餐桌旁忙忙碌碌
Aunt Chloe(克鲁伊⼤婶): Laws, now! W on’t it look natural to him?I set his plate just where he likes it, round by the fire. Johnny likes the warm seat. O, go way!—why didn’t S ally get out de best tea-pot, the little new one, Johnny got for Missis, Christmas? I’ll have it out! And Missis has heard from Master Johnny?
“哦，这样摆怎么样？看上去不错吧？”她说，“我把少爷的座位放在靠炉⽕的地⽅，他总是喜欢暖和的位⼦。呀，糟啦，萨莉没把最好的茶壶摆出来，就是圣诞节时少爷送给太太的那个新茶壶，我去拿出来吧。对了，少爷来信了吧？”
Mrs. Shelby (谢尔⽐太太): Yes, Chloe. But only a line, just to say he would be home tonight, if he could,—that’s all.
“我接到信了，克鲁伊，他说回家来再详细谈谈。”
Aunt Chloe(克鲁伊⼤婶):Just like Master Johnny, he wants to tell everything by himself.
“少爷就是这个脾⽓，什么事都要亲⾃宣布。”
谢尔⽐太太笑了
约翰尼⾛进来
Aunt Chloe：Master Johnny！
“约翰尼少爷回来了！”
Johnny Shelby (sadly):O, poor Aunt Chloe! I’d have given all my fortune to have
brought him with me, but he’s gone to a better country.”
“可怜的克鲁伊婶婶！”约翰尼悲哀地说：“即使倾家荡产，我也会把汤姆赎回来的，可是他已经离开我们了，去了天堂。”
太太悲痛地叫了⼀声，克鲁伊却没有哭，也没有说话。
⼤家⾛进餐厅⾥，克鲁伊双⼿不停地颤抖着. 她把⼿放在太太⼿⾥，说：
Aunt Chloe (sadly): Just as I knew it would be, be sold, and murdered on plantations! “我早就知道，被卖到种植园⾥去，迟早会死的呀！”
母亲节收到女儿的礼物怎么发朋友圈克鲁伊转⾝向外⾯⾛去，她的背影看上去骄傲⽽且顽强。太太追上去拉住她的⼿，把她按在椅⼦上，⾃⼰也坐在她旁边。
Mrs. Shelby ：My poor, good Chloe!
“克鲁伊，你好命苦！”她说。
克鲁伊把头倚在太太的肩上，开始抽泣起来
Aunt Chloe ：O Missis! Excuse me, my heart is broke！
“太太，别怪我，我的⼼碎了啊！”
Mrs. Shelby （sadly）：I know it is, and I cannot heal it, but Jesus can. He heals the broken hearted, and binds up their wounds.
“我知道，”太太满脸是泪⽔，“我虽然不能安慰你，可基督能够抚慰你的伤痛，他总是医好伤⼼⼈的痛苦。”
旁⽩：There was a silence for some time, and all wept together. Mrs. Shelby could only hold her hand. At last, Johnny, sitting down beside the mourner, and, with simple pathos, repeated the triumphant scene of her husband’s death, and his last messages of love.
没有⼈说话，⼈们都悲哀地哭泣。约翰尼坐在克鲁伊⾝边，握着她的⼿，叙述了汤姆逝世的情景。他满怀深情，⾔辞扼要，把汤姆临死前的话转述给⼤家。第四幕Scene IV
终获⾃由
旁⽩：About a month after this, one morning, all the servants of the Shelby estate were convened together in the great hall that ran through the house, to hear a few words from their young master.
To the surprise of all, he appeared among them with a bundle of papers in his hand, containing a certificate of freedom to every one on the place, which he read successively, and presented, amid the sobs and tears and shouts of all present.
⼀个⽉以后的⼀天上午，谢尔⽐庄园的全部仆役都聚集在上房的厅堂⾥，听少爷讲话。
令⼈意外的是，他⼿⾥竟然拿着许多契约书，庄园中每⼀个奴⾪的⾃由证书都在契约书⾥。每个⼈都哭泣着、欢喜地叫喊着，
约翰尼念着他们的名字，把证书发到每个⼈⼿中。
仆⼈们向少爷表⽰感谢

约翰尼说：“你们还记得善良的⽼汤姆叔叔吗？”
Johnny Shelby：Don’t thank me for you freedom , T hank Uncle Tom.“不要感谢我给了你们⾃由”他说，“你们应该感谢汤姆叔叔”
