  当今,南极有一座房子,叫阿蒙森—斯科特南极站。室内暖融融的,无论夏冬,人
们都可以在那儿生活、 工作。 飞机毫不费力地便能飞抵或是飞离南极站。 从这儿到世界其
它地方,要不了多少小时。但是从南极站出来走上 500 米,那儿的南极洲便再次成为地

  The race began in the summer of 1910.
  On June lst,in London,ablack ship,the Terra Nova, wentdown the river
Thames to the sea.Thousandsof people stood by the river to watch it.Theywere all
excited and happy.
  On the Terra Nova,CaptainRobert Falcon Scott smiled quietly.Itwas a very
important day for him.He wasa strong man,not very tall,inthe blue clothes of a
captain.He wasforty-one years old,but he had a youngface,like a boy.Hiseyes were
dark and quiet.
  One man on the ship,TitusOates,smiled at Scott.
  'What an exciting day,Captain!'hesaid.'Look at those people!Ifeel like an
important man!'
  Scott laughed.'Youare important,Titus,'hesaid.'And you're going to be
famous,too.Weall are.Do you see this flag?'Helooked at the big British flag at the

back of the ship,andsmiled at Oates.'That flag is comingwith us,'he said.
  'In the Antarctic,I'mgoing to carry it under my clothes. We'regoing to be the first
men at the South Pole,andthat flag is going to be first,too!'

  Five days later,onJune 6th,a man opened the door of hiswooden house in
Norway.He was a tall man,witha long face.He waited outside the housefor a
minute.Everything was very quiet.Hecould see no houses,only
mountains,trees,andwa-ter.It was nearly dark.Thesky was black over the
mountains.
  The man smiled,andwalked quickly away from the house,down
to the sea.In the
water,abig wooden ship waited for him.The mangot onto the ship,and talked and
laughedquietly with his friends.
  The ship's name was Fram,andthe man was Roald Amundsen.The Fram wasthe
most beautiful ship on earth,Amundsenthought.His friends were the best skierson
earth,too.Oneof them,Olav Bjaaland,smiledat him.
  'North Pole,here wecome,Captain,'hesaid.
  'Yes.'Amundsen said.Hisfriends could not see his face in the dark.'Framis going
to the Arctic.'
什么时候高考2022年  Everyone on the Fram was ready to go to the North Pole,tothe Arctic.Amundsen
wanted to go there,too.Butfirst he wanted to go south.His friendsdidn't know that.
  At midnight on June 6th,theFram moved quietly away from Amundsen's
house,outto sea.

water,near the trees,onthe house—dogs everywhere!'
  Two men came out of the house.'Hassel!Lindstrom!'Amundsensaid.'It's good
to see you!Howmany dogs do you have for me?'

  It was not easy.Thedogs were fat and strong,and they didn'twant to go on the
ship.But at last,afterthree hours'hard work,all ninety-ninewere on the ship,and
the Fram went outto sea again.
  The men were not happy.Theweather was bad,the dogs were dirty,andsome of
the men were ill.They began toask questions.
  'Why are we bringing dogs witn us?'askedone man,Jo- hansen.'We'regoing
thousands of kilometres south,pastCape Horn,and then north to Alaska.Whynot
wait,and get dogs in Alaska?'
  'Don't ask me,'saidhis friend,Helmer Hanssen,'Idon't understand it.'
  The men talked for a long time.Then,onSeptember 9th, Amundsen called
everyoneto the back of the ship.He stood quietlyand looked at them.Behind him was a
bigmap.It was not a map of the Arctic.Itwas a map of Antarctica.
  Bjaaland looked at Helmer Hanssen,andlaughed.Then Amundsen began to
speak.
  'Boys,'he said.'Iknow you are unhappy.You often ask medifficult
questions,and I don't answer.Well,I'mgoing to an-swer all those questions
now,today.
  We began to work for this journey two years ago.Then,wewanted to be the first
men at the North Pole.Butlast year,Peary,anAmerican,found the North
Pole.SoAmerica was first to the North Pole,notNorway.We're going there,butwe're
too late.'
  'I don't understand this,'Bjaalandthought.'Why is Amundsen talking aboutthe
North Pole,with a map of Antarcticabehind him?'
