trouble is a friend中文歌词“A Friend in Need”or“A Friend to Needle”—Review on William Somerset Maugham“A Friend in Need”
As to the title “A Friend in Need", I immediately consider a famous English proverb “A friend in need is a friend indeed." However, why doesn't the author add“a friend indeed" to complete the whole sentence? Is it a simple omission?Or has it got some profound meaning? Funtionally, the title arouses my interests in the whole novel.
After reading the whole novel, I am impressed by Somerset Maugham's writing style especially the creativity of naming the title. It impresses me with Maugham' s cleverness in writing which is crowned as the most obvious feature of his writing style. Cleverness,to some extent, means that his novel has a well-knit and logical structure. For example, in the first part of the novel, he gives his understanding of friends,“My old friends are just those of whom I can say that I don't know anything about them". The second part of the I novel is about his memory of Edward Hyde Burton and Mr Burton 's portrait description. In this part,
the author gives a vivid description of Mr Burton's appearances. The climax of the plot lies in the third part- the story between Edward Hyde Burton and Lenny Burton, a remiitance man who asks for help to get out of financial trouble. After reading the story, you will find that the first and second parts of the story play an important role in pushing the climax of the story. .
Irony is also the main feature of his works.“A Friend in Need" can fully show this element. Themetically, the title“A Friend in Need" is the biggest irony of the whole story. Actually, Edward Hyde Burton is a friend to needle others instead of“a friend in need". Somerset Maugham uses a great number of rhetorical devices to achieve the strong sence of irony. First,in the third paragraph,“You felt that he would not hurt a fly.'
