石敢当,古代神名,又叫泰山石敢当,石将军、石神等,石敢当习俗起源于上古时期的灵石崇拜。明代以后,石敢当信仰与东岳泰山崇拜紧密结合,由“石敢当”发展到“泰山石敢当”,其
功能从最早的“镇宅”到“化煞”再到“治病”、“门神”、“辟邪”、“防风”等的转变。

传说在泰山脚下的一个村子里住着一个壮士,姓石,名敢当。为人正直勇敢,爱打抱不平,在泰山一带很有名。有一天,石敢当进城卖柴,见贴有王员外的告示:谁能为他家降妖,愿将女儿许配为妻。石敢当见义勇为,决心除害,他持宝剑藏在小房中,当妖精进
来时,他举剑大喝一声:“泰山石敢当在此!”妖精一听,吓得驾起妖风狼狈逃走。事后,小和石敢当成了亲过起了美满日子。谁知妖精逃走后,又到别村去祸害。村民听说石敢当能驱妖,便来请他。可是,石敢当往这村赶,妖精又跑到那村去造孽。石敢当又没有分身法,怎么办呢?后来,聪明的妻子对他说:“何不把你的名字刻在石碑上,放在宅墙上镇妖呢。”于是,人们纷纷在石头上雕刻“泰山石敢当”五字,立于墙根、街巷、桥头、要冲,以保村宅平安。
