My Favorite Chinese Story: The Monkey King
Hi! My name is Li Ming and I'm in 5th grade. Our teacher Mr. Wang asked us to write about our favorite story from Chinese literature. There are so many great tales to choose from, but I picked the classic Journey to the West. Specifically, I want to tell you all about the crazy adventures of the hilarious Monkey King!
Journey to the West is an ancient novel about a Buddhist monk named Xuanzang who travels from China to India to get sacred scriptures. He has help from three powerful supernatural protectors - Monkey King, Pigsy, and Sandy. But the Monkey King, whose real name is Sun Wukong, totally steals the show with his mischief and martial arts skills.
Monkey King wasn't always a companion to Xuanzang though. He used to be the fresh Handsome Monkey King who ruled the monkeys in the mountains. One day, Monkey King learned some amazing cloud-somersault skills from his teacher the Patriarch Subhuti. With these new powers, he could fly really fast just by somersaulting!
Monkey King got full of himself after learning the cloud skills. He started calling himself the "Great Sage Equal to Heaven" which made the Buddha and celestial gods pretty mad. When the gods saw how unruly Monkey King had become, they tried to get rid of him with a but he was too powerful and put it out!
After failing to defeat him, the gods had to come up with a clever plan. The Buddha tricked Monkey King into letting himself get trapped under a heavy mountain. For 500 years, the rebellious Monkey King was squished motionless under that mountain! Can you imagine being stuck like that for centuries? I'd go completely stir-crazy!
Anyway, Monkey King eventually got released from his mountain prison by the kind monk Xuanzang. In return for freeing him, the Monkey King promised to protect Xuanzang
on his long journey to India. And man, was Monkey King the perfect bodyguard! He used his awesome cloud skills and magical staff to fight off monsters, demons, and all sorts of crazy villains.
My favorite part is when Monkey King takes on the Princess Iron Fan. She was this mean princess who kept her land in eternal winter by fanning it with her indestructible iron fan. When she wouldn't let Xuanzang pass through her territory, Monkey King challenged her to a duel. It was such an epic fight between Princess Iron Fan's fan powers and Monkey King's staff skills! In the end, the clever Monkey King figured out her weakness and won the battle.

Or when he got his butt kicked by the fierce Zen masters of the Transcended Streams Nunnery. My personal favorite is the Banana Hunger Fever tale where Monkey King goes bonkers after not eating his favorite snack - bananas!
I love Monkey King because he's such a funny troublemaker, but also an incredibly loyal friend to Xuanzang. Yeah, he has a big mouth and ego, but his heart is in the right place. Monkey King uses his bravery and kung-fu talents to protect the monk and help spread Buddhist enlightenment across the lands.

My Favorite Chinese Story
Hi there! My name is Lily and I am going to tell you about my favorite Chinese story. It's called the Monkey King and it's from a really old book called Journey to the West. This book has been really popular in China for hundreds of years!
The story is about this mischievous monkey who gets born from a rock on a mountain. He learns awesome kung fu skills and becomes super strong and powerful. His name is Sun Wukong but everyone calls him the Handsome Monkey King. One day, Sun Wukong gets invited to live in Heaven because of how tough he is. But he starts causing a bunch of trouble up there and makes the gods really mad!
Sun Wukong gets cocky and rebellious against the gods. He steals special peaches that give immortality and eats them all. He also pees on a magical pillar that holds up the universe! The gods freak out and try to stop the Monkey King but he's too strong for them. They can't defeat him even when their best warriors fight him.
Finally, Buddha steps in and manages to trap Sun Wukong under a magic mountain for 500 years as punishment. While he's trapped, the Monkey King has crazy nightmares of being burned, frozen, and all kinds of terrible things. After 500 long years, a monk named Xuanzang comes along on a journey to collect sacred scriptures from India. The gods tell Xuanzang he needs to free Sun Wukong so the monkey can protect him on the dangerous journey.
