How good are you at saying "no"? For many, it's 36 difficult. This is especially true of editors, who by nature tend to be eager and engaged participants in everything they do. Consider these  37  :
It's late in the day. That front-page package you've been working on is nearly complete; one last edit and it's finished. Enter the  38  editor, who makes a suggestion requiring a more-than-modest rearrangement of the design and the addition of an information box. You want to scream: "No! It's done!" What do you do?
The first rule of saying no to the boss is don't say no. She probably has something in mind when she makes suggestions, and it's up to you to find out what. The second rule is don't raise the stakes by challenging her    39  . That issue is already decided. The third rule is to be ready to cite options and consequences. The boss's suggestions might be  40  , but there are always consequences. She might not know about the pages backing up that need attention, or about the designer who had to go home sick. Tell her she can have what she wants, but explain the consequences. Understand what she's trying to accomplish and propose a Plan B that will make it happen without destroying what you've done so far.
Here's another case. Your least-favorite reporter suggests a dumb story idea. This one should be easy, but it's not. If you say no, even 41  , you risk inhibiting further ideas, not just from that reporter, but from others who heard that you turned down the idea. This scenario is common in newsrooms that lack a systematic way to filter story suggestions.
Two steps are necessary. First, you need a system for how stories are proposed and reviewed. Reporters can tolerate rejection of their ideas if they believe they were given a fair hearing. Your gut reaction (本能反应) and dismissive rejection, even of a 42  idea, might not qualify as systematic or fair.
Second, the people you work with need to  43  a "What if ...?" agreement covering "What if my idea is turned down?" How are people expected to react? Is there an appeal process? Can they 44  the idea and resubmit it? By anticipating "?" situations before they happen, you can reach understanding that will help ease you out of 45  .

“That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” But parents can’t handle it when teenagers put this  1    into practice. And now technology has become the new field for the age-old battle between adults and their freedom-craving kids.
Locked indoors, unable to get on their bicycles and hang out with their friends, teens have turned to social media and their mobile phones to   2  with their friends. What they do online often   3  what they might otherwise do if their mobility wasn’t so heavily limited in the age of helicopter parenting. Social media and smartphones apps have become so popular in recent years. Teens want the freedom to explore their identity and the world around them, so they jump online.
As teens have moved online, parents have projected their  4  onto the Internet, imagining all the potential dangers that youth might face---from violent strangers to cruel peers.
Rather than helping teens develop strategies for discussing public life and the  5  risks of interacting with others, fearful parents have focused on tracking, monitoring and . These don’t help teens develop the skills they need to manage complex social situations, assess risks and get help when they’re in trouble. It gradually weakens the learning that teens need to do as they come of age in a technology-soaked world.
The key to helping youth handle  7  life isn’t more restrictions. It’s freedom — plus communication. Famed urban theorist Jane Jacobs used to argue that the safest neighborhoods were those where communities   8  took interest in and paid attention to what happened on the streets. Safety didn’t come from keeping everyone indoors but from a   9  to watch out for one another. The same is true online.
Teens need the freedom to wander the   10  street, but they also need to know that caring adults are behind them and supporting them wherever they go.

Super-achieving moms on Wall Street have househusbands! The report pointed to an increase of ten times in the number of women in finance with stay-at-home husbands, allowing them to achieve success without the  1  of housework and child raising.
I don’t doubt the increase in the number of households where husband and wives are 2    roles, but this arrangement isn’t really new. The real news is that until recently, no one wanted to admit it.
Many of the women who make it to the top of the heap often have a man at home who’s 3 the kids around town, planning the meals, and otherwise keeping the hearth fired up. Indeed, you can go to any number of big firms in New York City where there’s a handful of female partners, and the  4  among the associates is that those women in power are either single or married to men who stay at home. But they just didn’t like to talk about it.
I sensed that   5  when I did a story on female partners at big Wall Street firms with househusbands a few years ago. Though three couples were happy to speak to me on the record about their arrangement, many more bowed out about going   6  .
Often, successful women are loath to admit that their husband is really the one minding the home. “He has primary responsibility for the kids, but he also works on the side,” explained one partner about how her husband spends his time. But when he was   7  about what type of work the husband does, the reply is often   8  . “He’s doing consulting” is a popular explanation.
All of this points to our rooted   9  about changing gender roles. The power moms with the stay-at-home husbands are just as uneasy, often more embarrassed than proud that they’ve 10__ the traditional order.

Expressing oneself in writing is one of the most important skills I teach to strengthen the whole student.   Let’s say you launch a new business venture and it doesn’t go well at first. How do you know when you should press forward and when it makes more sense to give up? Here are my observations.
The Excited Minority
If the average person looks at your product and says some version of “That’s a good idea,” it means nothing. There is no predictive power in discovering that people have a ____1____ view of what you’re trying to sell. Instead, you want some slice of the general public to be ____2____ enthusiastic about your product.
When Dilbert first launched in newspapers, it got a bad reaction from the ___3____ of readers. However, a minority of newspaper-comics readers were unusually excited about Dilbert, which leads me to my second point.
Watch Their Hands, Not Their Mouths
In my experience, one of the most____4____ indicators that your product will be a hit involve your customers’ hands. In the early days of Dilbert, people were cutting their favorite strips from newspapers and hanging them on walls. That requires the use of hands. People were putting Dilbert in their Powerpoint presentations, and that requires hands on the keyboard. If your customers are only responding with words, ____5____ your expectations. But if they start using their hands, it’s going to be a fun ride.
The Bad Version Works
A product that is going to someday be a home run is almost always popular in the first, ____6____ version.
For example, the first cell phones were terrible products by today’s standards. They were the size of bricks and they dropped calls like crazy. But that didn’t ___7____ the demand. It was the same pattern with fax machines and personal computers, to name a few.
If you hope to ____8____ people with your product or business, look for three things to predict success; early ____9____, customer demand despite obvious product ____10____, and customer who are responding with their hands.

In the early years of the nineteenth century, the United States extended only as far west as the border between Kansas and Missouri. At that time, most of what is now Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and southern California was part of Mexico. Mexico was ruled by Spain, a country that was __41___ to the trade between its Mexican provinces and the United States. As a result, travel between the United States and the southwest was limited. Mexico’s independence from Spain in 1821 opened up opportunities for daring and innovative traders and for eventual US ____42_____ of the southwest.
In contrast to Spanish policy, the Mexican government was open to trade with the US. Aware of the money to be made, William Becknell, a Missouri trader, transported a load of goods from western Missouri to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 1821. His route followed an old trail(小径) long used by Native Americans, fur trappers, and explorers. It meandered(迂回前进) westward along the Arkansas River and then turned southward through the mountains. At Santa Fe, Becknell found a population long ___43___ of supplies and manufactured goods. His goods fetched high prices.
Becknell planned a second trip. This time, instead of __44____ horses, he used mule-drawn wagons. He also decided to follow a ___45__ route, which turned south some 150 miles east of La Junta, Colorado. This route, however, crossed an expanse of desert. Becknell and his party nearly died of __46___ before they found the Cimarron River. This new route cut 10 days from the trip. Soon 75 percent of the traffic between Missouri and Santa Fe used this route. Becknell’s route became known as the Santa Fe Trail. His __47___ journeys opened Santa Fe for trade and earned him the nickname Father of the Santa Fe Trail.
Word of the ___48___ buyers in Santa Fe spread quickly. Within a few years, the Santa Fe Trail became a busy trade route. Traffic increased during the Mexican-American War(1846-1848), when the trail became an important ___49____ route. After the American victory, the Southwest became US territory. Army forts(堡垒) along the trail ensured a steady demand for military supplies, and business continued to boom. The arrival of the transcontinental railroad in Santa Fe in 1880 proved to be the beginning of large-scale settlement of the southwest. Trains ____50____ the Santa Fe Trail, as people and goods began to travel by rail.

With only about 1,000 pandas left in the world, China is desperately trying to clone the animal and save the endangered species. That’s a move similar to what a Texas A&M University researchers have   41  for the past five years in a project called “Noah’s Ark.”
Noah’s Ark is aimed at collecting eggs, embryos (胚胎), semen and DNA of endangered animals and storing them in liquid nitrogen. If certain species should become   42  , Dr. Duane Kraemer, a professor in Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine, says there would be enough of the basic building blocks to   43  the species in the future.
It is estimated that as many as 2,000 species of mammals, birds, reptiles will face extinction in over 100 years. The panda,   44  only to China, is in danger of extinction in the next 25 years.
This week, Chinese scientists said they grew an embryo by introducing cells from a dead female panda into the egg cells of a Japanese white rabbit. They are now trying to   45  the embryo into a host animal.
The entire   46  could take from three to five years to complete.
“The nuclear transfer of one species to another is not easy, and the lack of available panda eggs could be a major problem,” Kraemer believes. “They will probably have to do several hundred transfers to result in one pregnancy (怀孕). It takes a long time and it’s difficult, but this could be  47  science if it works. They are certainly not putting any live pandas at risk, so it is  48  the effort,” adds Kraemer, who is one of the leaders of the project at Texas A&M, the first-ever   49  at cloning a dog.
“They are trying to do something that’s never been done, and this is very similar to our work in Noah’s Ark. We’re both trying to save animals that face extinction. I certainly   50  their effort and there’s a lot we can learn from what they are attempting to do. It’s a research that is very much needed.”

In the past few decades, the popular belief in the area of organizational behavior and psychology has been that   41    workers are better workers. However, new research at the University of Alberta shows that sad workers are more   42    .
Psychologist Dr. Robert Sinclair recently conducted a series of four studies 43  the effects of experimentally induced ( 诱发的 ) happiness versus sadness on work     44    by asking the participants to build circuit boards. In the first study, sad people committed   45    few errors than did happy people, but there was no difference in the number of boards   46    .
In similar studies Sinclair found the same results along with the evidence that happy people might not     47    as much energy to the task in order to maintain their happy moods ---- they considered that task as something that might detract from their     48    feelings.
These findings are not surprising, said Sinclair, since there has been a growing body of literature in the area of social psychology     49    that sad moods lead to more calm lengthy intent consideration and often, more thought or accurate judgments. So it’s important for organizations to take into account the     50    of their employees. It seems it could be beneficial to creating situations that lead people to believe that performing their jobs will cause them to feel good.

In only two decades Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing U.S. minority. As their children began moving up through the nation’s schools, it became clear that a new class of academic achievers was____41____. Their achievements are _____42____in the nation’s best universities, where mathematics, science and engineering departments have taken on a decidedly Asian character. This special liking for mathematics and science is partly explained by the fact that Asian-American students who began their educations abroad arrived in the U.S. with a ____43____grounding in mathematics but little or no knowledge of English. They are also influenced by the ____44____ of a good job after college. Asians feel there will be less unfair treatment in areas like mathematics and science because they will be judged more ____45____. And the return on the ____46____ in education is more immediate in something like engineering than with an arts degree.
Most Asian-American students owe their success to the influence of parents who are ____47____ that their children take full advantage of what the American educational system has to offer. An effective measure of parental attention is homework. Asian parents spend more time with their children than American parents do, and it helps. Many researchers also believe there is something in Asian Culture that breeds success, such ideals that ____48____ family values and emphasize education.
Both explanations for academic success worry Asian Americans because of fears that they feed a typical racial ____49____. Many can remember when Chinese, Japanese and Filipino immigrants were the victims of social ____50____. Indeed, it was not until 1952 that laws were laid down giving all Asian immigrants the right to citizenship.
