Hangzhou Travel Guide
Hangzhou is the capital of Zhejiang province and its political,
economic and cultural center. With its famous natural beauty and
cultural heritages, Hangzhou is one of China's most important
tourist venues.
The City, the southern terminus of the Grand Canal, is located on
the lower reaches of the Qiantang River in southeast China, a 乘风破浪排名
superior position in the Yangtze Delta and only 180 kilometers from
Shanghai. Hangzhou has a subtropical monsoon type climate with four
quite distinct seasons. However, it is neither too hot in summer nor
too cold in winter making it a year round destination.
The West Lake is undoubtedly the most renowned feature of Hangzhou,
noted for the scenic beauty that blends naturally with many famous
historical and cultural sites. In this scenic area, Solitary Hill,
the Mausoleum of General Yue Fei, the Six Harmonies Pagoda and the
Ling Yin Temple are probably the most frequently visited
attractions. The "Ten West Lake Prospects" have been specially
selected to give the visitor outstanding views of the lake,
mountains and monuments.
A number of national museums can be found in Hangzhou and are
representative of Chinese culture. Fine examples are the National
Silk Museum and Tea Museum. Along with the other museums in
Hangzhou, they provide a fascinating insight into the history of
Chinese traditional products.
One of the most important parts of traveling is tasting the local
delicacies. Hangzhou dishes are noted for their elaborate
preparation, sophisticated cooking and refreshing taste. Many local
specialties will be sure to make your trip a cultural experience. We
recommend that you try Beggar's Chicken (a chicken baked in clay),
West Lake Fish in Sweet Sour Source (vinegar coated fish fresh
caught from the la
ke), Dongpo Pork (braised pork) and Fried Shrimps
with Longjing Tea, etc.
The shopping environment in Hangzhou is exciting and convenient.
Travelers and tourists like to go to Qing He Fang Street. It is one
of the most famous and historic streets in the city and reflects
many of the features of the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279).
Shoppers will admire the antique buildings while purchasing items
from a wide range of local goods such as silks, tea or maybe a silk
parasol, brocade or a beautiful Hangzhou fan. These are just some of
the items to be found but there are many more.
At night Hangzhou has much to offer and teahouses and various kinds
of pubs are both plentiful and popular. Choosing one overlooking the
West Lake for a pleasant chat over a cup of tea is sure to make you
feel totally relaxed and refreshed.
While much of the ancient city that had been the capital of the
Southern Song Dynasty was destroyed during the Taiping Rebellion in
the mid-nineteenth century, today's Hangzhou is a modern and vibrant
economical center. As such it provides a base for many talented and
skilled people. Never the less, thanks to its unique setting by the
West Lake it continues to enjoy the many benefits of the natural
surroundings that have delighted visitors for centuries. Not only
was it much vaunted in his writings by the 13 century explorer,
Marco Polo but the Lake and its environs have inspired poets of
great renown such as Bai Juyi and Su Dongpo down the ages. There can
be no doubt that visit here is certain to be a memorable one.
Hangzhou may be overshadowed by some of the better known tourist
destinations which boast spectacular mountains, architectural
masterpieces, golden beaches or exotic ethnic cultures. However, the
city has an elegant air and a distinguished thousand year history.
Hangzhou is a noted ancient capital of China and is famed for its
West Lake and Grand Canal.
Liangzhu Culture, which dates from about 4,700 years ago, was part
of the vital cultural life existing in the Tiahu Lake drainage area,
in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. The archeological site
found here, named for its discovery in Liangzhu Town, is estimated
to be 5,000 years old. At that time both bronze and stone wares were
used, black pottery was manufactured and the tripod vessel was used
工伤保险赔偿流程for cooking. Jade ritual articles, silk pieces and thread are also
typical excavation finds, indicating the area's prosperity in the
prehistor
ic age.
Hangzhou city was established 2,000 years ago during the Spring and
Autumn Periods (770BC-476BC) on a site bordering Wu and Yue States.
Before the Sui Court (581-618) changed its name to Hangzhou, this
area was successively called Yuhang and Qiantang. A major event that
took place during the dynasty was the completion of the Grand Canal,
finally linking together the various sections constructed over a
thousand years.
The second wave of prosperity in Hangzhou's history occurred after
it became the capital of Wuyue State during the Five Dynasties and
Ten States (907-960) periods. A new city was built based on the site
of the prefecture government of Hangzhou during the Sui and Tang
(618-907) dynasties. Buddhism was becoming increasingly popular
during this period and this Buddhist state in Southeast China was
the only area to remain peaceful and unspoiled during the warring
years thanks to wise political decision making by the king. Since
then, Hangzhou has made the most of its fertile land, developing
advanced silk, tea and paper making techniques and enjoying a
commercial boom.
Moving forward to the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127), Hangzhou
became a renowned economic and cultural center for the entire
country. Later when the Southern Dynasty (1279-1368) moved its
regime southward, Hangzhou was nominated as its capital and lasted
as such for 152 years. The city reached its zenith at this time as
the biggest international trade center and the nation's political
and cultural center. It was also among the most populous cities in
the world.
Advanced silk, printing, paper and porcelain production, together
with an elegant society and culture made it the most beautiful and
luxurious city in the world, as praised by Italian traveler Marco
Polo. Although no longer the center of a dynasty, Hangzhou remains a
shining pearl in the southeast.
In classical poems, the Western Lake was alluded to as a great
beauty. The scene of many romantic and sad stories, the lake holds
many secrets. As well as the lake, the tea and silk industries,
Liangzhu Culture, the official kiln and Grand Canal museums are also
important attractions. There is much for the tourist to discover in
Hangzhou.
Hangzhou, a city famous for its scenic splendor, attracts more than
20 million tourists from home and abroad every year. Its unique
environment endowed by nature and those who have lived here, is an
accumulation o
f several thousand years that has formed many world
renowned natural, historical and cultural features.
Whenever talking about Hangzhou, the famous West Lake can never be
far from one's thoughts. Held on three sides in the embrace of hilly
peaks, this water wonderland has been an attraction for centuries
and it is small wonder that it was a favorite imperial retreat. The
lake and its environs have all the elements of a traditional Chinese
garden but on a grand scale. The natural setting of strangely shaped
peaks, serene forests and springs, dense foliage and a myriad of
blossoms especially in springtime are enhanced by a treasury of
sculpture and architectural features. The largest part of West Lake
is known as the Outer Lake and it is bounded by the North Inner
Lake, Yuehu Lake, West Inner Lake and Lesser South Lake.
The Gu Shan (Solitary Hill) lies between the Outer Lake and the
North Inner Lake and is an ideal spot from which to admire the
vista. For those who have a love of sculpture and art and those who
have a particular interest in Buddhism Fei Lai Feng (Peak Flown From
Afar) and Ling Yin Temple (Temple of the Soul's Retreat) are the
must see attractions. The nearby Mausoleum of General Yue Fei is a
monument to the patriot who was murdered in 1141 at the behest of
his archrival Qin Hui, the Song prime minister. These buildings
together with others in the vicinity of the lake such as the slender
13 storey high Six Harmonies Pagoda adds to the calm and beauty of
their surroundings.
Hangzhou is a beautiful city always ready to offer visitors more to
see. If you have more time to travel in the city and want to see
other places of wonderful landscape, you can visit the following
scenic spots. Hangzhou Botanical Garden is both a park embracing
beautiful plants and a research base to study botany. Hupao Spring
is famed for its unique fountain of high water quality. Mt.
Putuoshan Scenic Spot is held sacred by Buddhists and it was here
that over the centuries a once large Buddhist community was to
evolve. Red Carp Pond is the heart of Viewing Fish at Flower Harbor
Park (Huagang Guanyu), one of the ten places of interests at West
Lake. Thousand Islets Lake (Qian Dao Lake) is a pure lake with fresh
and clean air. Twin Peaks Piercing the Clouds is a unique sight in
foggy days.
No visitor to the West Lake and Hangzhou can fail to learn something
of this city's most famous products, namely silk and Longjing
(Dragon Well)
Tea. China National Silk Museum is the first Chinese
national museum to be dedicated to silk culture and is the largest
of its kind in the world. A similar museum is dedicated in homage to
tea. Located at the West Lake Dragon Well Tea Plantation, the
National Tea Museum provides a fascinating insight into the history
and production of Chinese tea. Additionally visitors can go to other
museums. Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine is the only
state-level professional Chinese medicine museum in China. Southern
Song Dynasty Guan Kiln Museum has been praised as the Civilized
Museum of Zhejiang Province and the first group of provincial
education base of patriotism.
Another natural spectacle to be found in Hangzhou is the Qiantang
River Bore that has enthralled people for centuries. Annually,
millions of people from both home and abroad flock there to watch
the magnificent tide on the eighteenth day of the eighth lunar month
(also around the Mid-Autumn Day). When the surging tide comes, the
water can rise up to a height of 30 feet and the noise it generates
sounds like thunder, or thousands of galloping horses.
The other great feat of much earlier engineering is the Grand Canal.
Linking Hangzhou in the south with Beijing in the north, this is the
longest man-made waterway in China and surpasses both the Suez and
Panama canals. Boating on the old Chinese Canal is one of the best
ways to get a panoramic view of the landscape of typical river towns
in southern China, which include ancient dwellings, stone bridges of
traditional designs and historical relics.
Around Hangzhou, there are also some places worth visiting. For
example, Wuzhen, ranking first among the six ancient towns south of
the Yangtze River was authorized as the Provincial Ancient Town of
History and Culture. Xitang is a famous town with thousands of years
of history. Mogan Mountain has been listed as one of the 'Four Best
就业推荐表自我鉴定Summer Resorts in China' along with Beidaihe Scenic Spot, Mt. Lushan
and Jigong Mountain. Tiantai Mountain Scenic Area is known for its
beautiful scenery and for being the cradle of the Tiantai Sect of
Chinese Buddhism.
Hangzhou, with its surrounding hills, water and numerous beautiful
sightseeing places, has been ranked as one of the ten best famous
tourist cities in China.
Hangzhou has a subtropical monsoon climate with mild and moist
weather and four distinct seasons. Average temperature in summer is
28.6C (83.5F), 3.8C (38.8 F)
in winter. Generally, spring starts in
March; April and May are the best seasons for visiting with the
average temperature between 9-15C. June, July, and August are the
rainy season with frequent showers. The end of June to the early 哥特式建筑代表作品
part of July, marks the start of the Meiyu Season (or Plum Rain
Season, of about a month long rainy season, beginning in early
summer when the plum fruit ripens in the middle and lower reaches of
the Yangtze River). In early August, typhoons often occur bringing
heavy rain. During this period, you should bring an umbrella with
you. Even if it does not rain, an umbrella is also a nice prop for
photos you take at the West Lake. September and October feature
excellent weather when clear skies and bracing air can be enjoyed
almost every day. In winter, on the other hand, the city suffers
severe cold since most places are not equipped with heating systems.
However, Hangzhou is still a tourist capital of China; many
travelers pour into the city, their numbers peaking during holidays
and weekends.
Local Festivals
In addition to celebrating traditional Chinese festivals, natives
