1. at the end of your rope（山穷水尽，失去耐性）
表示：have no more strength left to deal with a problem or a difficult situation
想一想人们用绳索攀岩的时候，如果你还在半空而绳子却不幸到了尽头，那么你真的是"at the end of your rope"（山穷水尽），无法达到预定的目标了。还有一种说法，饲养家禽的时候，鸡鸭被绳子拴住（at the end of the rope），所以只能在“一定的范围内”觅食。
日常生活中，"at the end of one's rope"常用来喻指“山穷水尽，智穷力竭”。例如：
I've tried everything, but nothing's worked. I'm at the end of my rope.
我已经尝试过所有的办法了，但都没有用，我已经山穷水尽了。
在贬义的层面上，该片语还有黔驴技穷的意思。比如：
He was at the end of his rope as the leader of the company.
