1. at the end of your rope(山穷水尽,失去耐性)
表示:have no more strength left to deal with a problem or a difficult situation
日常生活中,"at the end of one's rope"常用来喻指山穷水尽,智穷力竭。例如:
I've tried everything, but nothing's worked. I'm at the end of my rope.
He was at the end of his rope as the leader of the company.
"at the end of one's rope"也表示"(especially AmE) to have no more patience"
A: I'm at the end of my rope with you. Are you coming with me or not?
B: Give me ten more minutes. I want to know how the show ends.
2. at the eleventh hour(在最后一刻)
the last moment before something important happens.
If any guest failed at the eleventh hour, Todd was asked to dine.
The patrol was almost surrounded and then, at the eleventh hour, reinforcements arrived.
It was at the eleventh hour that he got wind of what had happened.
It takes two to tango.
It takes two to tango: spoken used to say that if a problem involves two people, then both people are equally responsible.
It takes two to tango"的字面意思是探戈舞需要两个人来跳,照此推理,本应推出个鼓舞人心的团结才是力量,可它怎么竟成了贬义词一个巴掌拍不响
Tango这个音很容易让人联想到它的同音异形词tangle(纠缠、扭缠在一起)。 If you make a mistake, get all tangled up, just tango on."(如果(探戈)跳错了,那就让大家的舞步都混乱好了,这才是探戈。)
It takes two to tango其实是取了tangle的谐音,而整个短语"It takes two to tango"实质上由英国俗语"It takes two to make a quarrel"(一个巴掌拍不响)发挥创造而来。
A conflict is not the fault of just one person or the other; they are often both to blame, because it takes two to tango.
2.
A: Why does the couple next door often quarrel?
B: Well, it takes two to tango. Maybe both of them are at fault.
1. I am emotionally unavailable.
例如“I'm emotionally unavailable.”
“I'm unavailable.”
He emotionally cheated on me.
She is too emotional.
例如我说"I'm still available." 而"I'm unavailable."
2. footloose and fancy-free
如果你形容一个人footloose and fancy-freeyou mean that they are not married or in a similar relationship, and you therefore consider them to have very few responsibilities or commitments.
1. When the kids leave home, you'll be footloose and fancy-free (=free and without worrie
s).
2. In the eyes of the public, a divorced man is footloose and fancy-free.
