Could 的用法
1.Could 是can 的过去式，它有以下用法：
(1)could 作为can 的过去式，可表示过去具备的能力。如：
She couldn’t dress herself until five .
Could you swim when you were eight?
Could 和was /were able to 都可表示过去的能力。但如果表示过去具体的行为能力，不用could，而用was /were able to 表示。如：
Luckily, everyone was able to escape from the fire .
（2）表示礼貌客气的请求、恳请对方做某事，常用句型could you (please)……?表示请求希望对方允许自己做某事时，用Could I ……? 时态上还属于现在时。如：
Could you please pass me the book on the desk?
Could I have a look at your photo?
2. 对could 引导的一般疑问句的回答：
（1）当could 表示能力时，肯定、否定回答仍用could/couldn’t 如：
-----Could you ride a bike when you were ten?
-----Yes, I could. /No , I couldn’t.
（2）could表示礼貌请求时，其肯定回答和否定回答不用could ，习惯上肯定回答用may,can等；否定回答用can’t或mustn’t（语气重）；有时也可避而不用。如：can的过去式
① ----Could you help me, please?
----Of course (, I can)
② ----Could you stay for a little longer?
----Sorry ( ,I can’t ). I have to be back before seven.
③ ----Could I smoke here, please?
----No(,you mustn’t).Look at the sign “No Smoking”!
1.----Could I have some of your water?
----Certainly, ____________
