other 用法辨析
I.有确定数目的
1、 表示两件东西或两个人中的“一个……另一个……”这一意思时，用one…the other… 。

那儿有二本英语书，一本是Lily的，另一本是Kate的。
2、强调确定数目中的“一个”与“其余的”，用one … the others/the rest …。 ●●●●

Of the six pens ,one is red ,the others are green 。
六支钢笔中，一个是红的，其余的是绿的。
3、表示许多人或物中的“一部分”“其余的全部分”，用some…the others（the other+名词复数）/the rest 。这一用法的条件是有。

II.不确定数目的
1、表示许多人或物中的“一部分”和“另一部分（并非全部）”，用some…others（other+名词复数）/some…。

在我们的花园中，我们有许多花，一部分是红的，另一部分是黄的。
2、表示三者或三者以上的另一个时，用another。

这个杯子坏了，给我另拿一个来（在许多杯子中的另外一个）
another 表达的意思常有：（1）= a different one （2）= one more （3）= also one 等。
（1）To know is one thing ,to practise is another.知道是一件事，练习是另一件事。
(2)If you don't like this one ,try another .如果你不喜欢这个，试一试另一个。
(3)If I am a fool, you are another. 如果我是一个傻子，你是另一个。
(4)This coat is too big ,Show me another .这件外套太大，给我看另一件。
other (1)常见固定词组：
the other day 几天前
every other day 每隔一天
each other 互相（常指两者，而三者或以上常用：one another )
III.表示“另外几个……”时other和another的区别others什么意思
“数字+other+名词复数”
“another+数字+名词复数”。
“另外三天”的表达为：3 other days= another 3 days.
例题：――Have you finished your report yet?
――No, I’ll finish it in ____ ten minutes.

【分析】此题应选A。所添词在数字ten前，所以选another。此题不仅区别了两词在这点的用法，同时证明了another后也可接有数量的复数名词。
IV.any和any other的区别
any的含义表示“任何一个”， any+名词单数
any other表示“其他任何一个”， any other+名词单数
Sam is taller than ______ boy in his class. And he’s also taller than ______ boy in the other class.
解析：这两空答案分别为any other和any。因为山姆是自己班的成员之一，因此应该比自己所在班的其他任何一个男孩都高。但是山姆不是另一个班的成员，因此应该比另一个班任何一个男孩都高。
V.other和else的区别
other用于修饰名词，放在名词前，
else：1.修饰不定代词，放在不定代词后；
2.修饰特殊疑问词，放在特殊疑问词后。
other和else在有些时候可以互相转化，如: Where else=What other place
例题：――Is there ______ to buy? ――No, _______ shall we go?
A.anything other；where else B.other anything；else where
C.anything else；where else D.else anything；else where
解析：此题应选C。第一空，由于anything是不定代词，所以由else修饰，置于其后；第二空，修饰特殊疑问词，用else，置于其后。
