Nowadays, walking around the campus of any university in Chinaone cannot fail to be greeted with endless arrays of posters, in front of canteens or around dormitories, that attract students to attend diverse training programs whose sole purpose is to help obtain various professional certificates. It is by no means an exaggeration to claim that every college student has one or many such certificates.

Behind such a certificate craze are the heightening anxieties of students over their future c
areer. The supply of talents being gravely surplus on the labor market, prospective employers tend to recruit the best graduates with multiple talents. This employment orientation has rendered college education, largely confined to particular specialties, severely insufficient. To enhance their competitiveness on the job market, students have no alternative but to pursue additional qualifications by obtaining one certificate after another. Nobody seems to an exception to this nationwide craze.

However, such a practice can be a double-edged sword. While the knowledge and skills thus acquired can be a useful supplement to college education, students’ time and energy might be seriously diverted, rendering them unable to concentrate on their proper specialties. Nevertheless, your future employer’s primary concern is your in-depth knowledge and skills in your specialty and your failure to possess them might result in your failure to be considered in the first place, no matter how many certificates you can produce!

An undeniable fact about Chinese college students is their widespread involvement in the certificate craze over the years. Students of humanities seek certificates in computer application whereas students of science and technologies hunger for qualifications in Engli
sh proficiency. Everybody seems to need certificates in and outside his specialty.

As asserted by Darwin, only the fittest can survive. His doctrine can explain the current certificate craze among Chinese students. In a rapidly changing world, the job market calls for a labor force capable of handling diverse challenges. The paramount reason underlying students’ pursuit for certificates is to acquire qualifications that can add extra weight to their competitiveness in job hunting. Obviously, the more certificates one has, the greater value one means to the prospective employer. In order to succeed in landing a job and landing the best job, students have no alternative but to fight for as many certificates as possible.

Certificates are necessary everywhere in the world and we should appreciate students’ hard efforts to obtain certificates through extra training. Such a craze is not in crazy at all, because it stems from students’ sober realization that the knowledge in a particular specialty is far from sufficient for one to cope with complicated challenges nowadays. Rather than complaining about the harsh reality, students believe that God helps those who
help themselves. Through their own worthy efforts, Chinese students have comprehensively honed their knowledge and skills. That’s why they are much sought after by multinational companies.

I believe this so-called certificate craze is highly positive. It has made Chinese students the most industrious in the world and China’s emergence as the global center of manufacturing has much to do with the high-level and wide-ranged qualifications of its students who have entered the labor force. We should recognize the rationale behind the certificate craze, along with many admirable qualities of Chinese students as evidenced by their unremitting pursuit for certificates.

As soon as Chinese students enter college, they start attending various training programs in order to pass highly challenging examinations that can lead to certificates in various fields. Nobody seems to be an exception to this all-encompassing craze. Howevera level-headed analysis of this bizarre phenomenon reveals underlying abnormalities in the value orientations of both the students and our society.

While some students are truly motivated to expand their knowledge and skills by seeking extra training and obtaining qualifications that various certificates stand for, most simply use their certificates as a means for finding a job and they don’t actually like what they have to learn. In addition, many students are so crazy about obtaining certificates that they attach far less importance to the academic studies in their own specialties, thus putting the chart before the horse. Many students pride themselves on a large number of certificates th
at they have succeeded in securing, but with one’s time and energy being very limited, it’s impossible for a student to achieve depth of knowledge or true expertise in many different fields, especially when those fields lie outside one’s proper domain. A Jack of all trades is simply not qualified to cope with truly complicated challenges. Finally, the certificate craze being a contagious mania, it is likely that many students simply follow this trend blindly, without exercising their own serious judgment. As a result, they receive training that is to no avail at all.

This certificate craze also reflects our society’s morbid penchant for external criteria and blind trust in certificates as concrete evidence, rather than measuring young men and women by their genuine talents. This penchant and blind trust have resulted in the abuses of certificates. To cater to this craze, many training centers offer large-scale but low-quality training and they would issue certificates as long as students are willing to pay. In many cases, students obtain certificates without receiving any training at all. Worst of all, this certificate craze has driven many students to have their certificates fabricated, leading to s
erious damages on their moral integrity. It can be asserted that a large proportion of certificates generated amid this craze are worthless.

It should be pointed out that, even if many certificates are genuine, they are primarily vocational in nature, making their holders people of practical skills, rather than original thinkers. If this craze persists, we are bound to have more and more technicians and engineers, instead of people of vision and innovative thinking. That’s why China has not yet produced any of its own Nobel laureates, which is a woeful fact indeed.
